NEW DELHI: Equity markets in Wednesday's opening trade could not shrug off yesterday's negative sentiments as both Nifty and Sensex stayed in the red for the initial one hour of trading.

30-share BSE Sensex however opened with a minor gain of 2 points on 33,229.73 while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty lost 3.55 points to start trading on 10,236.60. However, both the indices extended losses and were down 0.20 per cent.

Government data released on Tuesday showed that the macros are in a state of concern with inflation hitting a 15-month high and factory output slowing to a 3-month low. The markets had pre- empted the development with the Sensex losing above 200 points yesterday.

In Wednesday's early trade, apart from IT, all the sectoral indices were in the red. Metal and bank stocks were losing the most.
